The ultimate guide to accordion hoses

Highly versatile accordion hoses are suitable for various industrial applications. Depending on their intended use, hoses can be made of different materials, although their manufacturing process is similar.

In this article, you’ll learn what type of accordion hose is best suited for your application.

What is an accordion hose?

Accordion hoses are designed to protect moving mechanical parts from the damaging effects of dust, moisture, UV radiation, and chemicals. The main advantage of the accordion design is that it absorbs both longitudinal and transverse movements and allows the hose to stretch and contract while maintaining a constant seal.

Due to the constant stretching of the structure, accordion hoses need to be made of a flexible and durable material. This is why they are often manufactured using various rubber compounds and plastic. At SIC, the material is always chosen according to the geometry of the hose and its specific properties.

Typically accordion hoses are cylindrical, but they can also be made in conical and square shapes. The hardness, flexibility, and color of the hose can be customized to suit the requirements of the intended application.

The accordion hoses are injection molded, the smallest parts and the sizes used on articulated buses alike.

The most frequent applications of accordion hoses

Accordion hoses are used in a wide range of industries, including automotive, agriculture, chemical, electronics, food, and light industry. They are mostly used to cover moving parts such as pistons, shafts and screws, to protect them against environmental impacts such as dust, chemicals, oils, and vapors.

They can also be used in the food industry for pulps, fats, flours, juices, and wines, as they are highly resistant to oils and fats and do not react with them. They are mostly used in material separation and vibration equipment. In addition, accordion hoses are well suited for transporting gases and air at ambient pressure, as they are light and flexible. For example, in the automotive industry, air conveying tubes can be of accordion design.

In expansion bonding applications, the harmonics are formed in series to absorb thermal movement and vibration even in high-temperature media, such as piping systems conveying exhaust gases or steam.

What materials can be used to make an accordion hose?

Nitrile or chloroprene Resistant to oils and fats, as well as weathering.
EPDM UV resistant, therefore suitable for outdoor use. Withstands most chemicals, but avoid contact with oils.
Silicone For specific purposes, such as high-temperature applications.
Viton (FPM) Provides long-term performance against high pH chemicals.

Accordion hoses at SIC

At SIC we primarily produce food grade and charge air coolant hoses.

Food grade hoses

Accordion hoses are made of silicon-coated platinum catalysts and are 100% designed for the food industry due to their structure and material. It is a unique material that does not come into chemical contact with food. It is also flexible and resistant to weathering, extreme heat from -50°C to +180°C, UV radiation, and pressure difference. The latter can be achieved with polyester reinforcement.

Accordion hoses for the food grade industry

We provide custom-made, FDA-certified products that meet industry-specific requirements. We supply accordion hose for the food industry at any bending angle up to 90°.

Charge air coolant hoses

Our silicone, charge air coolant hose runs between the turbocharger and the charge air cooler (CAC), and is designed to meet SAE J20 Class A requirements. They are available in a variety of sizes and shapes to connect any engine-mounted charge-air-cooling system.

We also manufacture charge air coolant hoses in twisted shapes, which can withstand vibrations perfectly and function well even under heavy loads. They can be manufactured in two different ways.

  1. Silicone hoses reinforced with meta-aramid are resistant to temperatures between – 56 and + 250 degrees Celsius.
  2. Polyester-reinforced hoses can be used between – 56 and + 180 degrees Celsius.

Materials

Accordion hoses are also available with fluorosilicone or FKM lining to increase oil and fuel resistance. If required we can also manufacture hose with metal fittings and flanged ends.

Tested

The service life of our hoses is tested by a proprietary system with cyclic pressures between 0 and 3 bars, while maintaining temperatures of up to 220 degrees Celsius, inside and outside the hose.
