How to choose the right hose for any OAT coolant

You may have already come across the OAT (Organic Acid Technology) hoses in our portfolio of silicone hoses. We market three types of OAT hoses manufactured for various purposes. You may find yourself discombobulated among the different models, not knowing which one to choose. Here’s everything you need to know about OAT hoses to pick the one that works the best for you!

What are OAT coolants?

When organic acid is added to the coolant, it helps to protect metal from corrosion even under high temperatures. They can provide a wet sleeve liner cavitation protection without using nitrite. OAT coolants are usually amber, red or orange in color. These coolants have an extended life expectancy due to minimally depleting Carboxylate Technology. In automotive applications, the extended lifespan can last up to 5 years or 250 000 kms, whereas, in heavy-duty applications up to 6 years or 960 000 kms. Organic Acid Technology assures that all materials used in the modern-day engine such as aluminium or magnesium are protected during operation. Therefore, OAT coolant is widely used in automotive, light and heavy-duty applications. In heavy-duty applications, coolant Extenders are used to top up certain additives at the product’s half-life.

What are the advantages of OAT coolants?

Using OAT coolants, there is no need for regular additions of Supplemental Coolant Additives (SCA’s) at scheduled service intervals, resulting in a significant decrease in operational costs. OAT-based corrosion inhibitors enjoy good reputation due to their non-toxic properties. They are biodegradable, meaning that they are not subject to any environmental and occupational health and safety issues. Moreover, they are completely amine, borate, nitrite and silicate free, meeting basic requirements of Asian OEM’s and avoiding silicate gelation and other fallout issues. Their phosphate free property guarantees meeting European and North American OEM’s, as well.

How to choose the right hose for your coolant

Follow our recommendations to make sure you choose the right hose for your OAT coolant. Keep in mind that silicone hoses might not work for some OAT or hybrid-OAT coolants, even if EHAs are absent. Note that Organic Acid Based Coolants containing ethyl hexanoic acids gradually soften standard silicone hoses and lead to bursting. Should you inadvertently choose the wrong hose, it can lead to damage to the fabric, coolant losses and premature hose failures.

For Ethylene glycol non-OAT and low-hybrid OAT coolants,

– in case of low temperatures (up to 130°C) choose: EPDM/Polyester hoses

– in case of high temperatures (EURO IV) opt for: Silicone/Polyester hoses

For high-hybrid OAT and OAT coolants where ethyl hexanoic acids are present,

– in case of low temperatures (up to 150°C) select “EPDM+” hoses

– in case of high temperatures choose: “Silicone Bolt” hoses

For coolants with high PH levels, ethyl hexanoic acid present at high temperatures,

– your safest options are: “Silicone Bolt+” hoses
